About GreenSmith

GreenSmith is a pioneering project focused on reducing CO2 emissions in the iron and steel industry. Supported by funding from RVO (The Netherlands), SWEA (Sweden), and MIMIT (Italy), our project operates under the CETPartnership umbrella, aiming to develop and implement innovative solutions for low-carbon steel production.

We envision a world where steel production is sustainable and environmentally friendly. By leveraging advanced technologies and collaborative efforts, we aim to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the steel industry.

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) ais crucial for achieving the Paris Agreement goals. These technologies play a vital role in reducing CO2 emissions that are otherwise difficult to avoid. In the iron and steel industry, CCS and CCU can help mitigate the environmental impact and contribute to global sustainability efforts.

Key Facts

  • The iron and steel industry emits approximately 3.0 GtCO2 annually, accounting for 7% of global industrial CO2 emissions.
  • Typical European steel production emits 1.7 to 1.9 tons of CO2 per ton of steel.
  • The industry employs around 360,000 people in the EU.

Our Goals

  • Develop a novel shaped sorbent for CO2 capture.
  • Demonstrate hydrogen recovery from various gas streams.
  • Create a Basic Engineering Design Package for TRL8 implementation.
  • Conduct Techno-Economic Analysis (TEA) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for sustainable practices.

This research was funded by CETP, the Clean Energy Transition Partnership under the 2022 CETP joint call for research proposals, co-funded by the European Commission (GA N°101069750) and with the funding organisations RVO (Netherlands), SWEA (Sweden) and MIMIT (Italy) .
